How to make the most of your wedding day photography

Here are several ideas and tips on making the absolute most of your wedding day photography opportunities. These are things that we commonly use at any given wedding. The most important part of all of this, is the relax and enjoy part!!!

 Plan ahead with your photographer, venue and planner

 Come up with a good timeline of the day

 Have enough time scheduled with your photographer

 Have two photographers

 Pick a photographer who fits your style, and is willing to work with you on this,
one who is flexible

 Have a wedding inspiration file/Pinterest board/ folder with photo’s etc. and share with your photographer before the wedding – at your engagement session or other prior communication

 Schedule around the sunlight – especially the sunset (www.sunrisesunset.com)

 Do not run late, plan extra time to get hair and make-up done

 Get ready in a well light room, photographers LOVE natural light, and the more the better

 Have all your accessories, dress, shoes, rings, jewelry etc. ready when the photographer arrives

 See the groom before the ceremony - have a "first look" moment and start your day this way!!

 Know that you will need to eat and drink during the day – bring snacks-bananas, protein bars, etc.

 Relax and enjoy the day

 Don’t look at the camera – wait for you photographer to ask you to look.

 Be willing to try new things and have fun with it

 SMILE, SMILE, SMILE

 Know that your dress may get a bit dirty in the process and be OK with it, there are many great cleaners out there who will get it clean and this is (likely) the only time you will wear it (not torn up, muddy or otherwise ruined, I just mean, it's OK to walk in the grass, or in a dirt field )

 No family paparazzi allowed – this is time for your photographers to do their best work, and cannot do that with other people trying to photograph you as well. Some brides and grooms are going to a “limited” photography request from their guests.

 Take a moment to yourselves without anyone around – walk away for just a few minutes and take a breath.

 Reception time – have your DJ or planner discuss with your photographer the reception timeline

 Have things for your guests to do: photo booth, live music, etc.

Rachel and Wes at Magnolia Manor in Lenoir City. They had a super cute country chic wedding theme with some wonderful details. The simple touches like mason jars, and draping flowers, the candy bar and chalkboard pulled it all together. Another really fabulous venue that you absolutely must consider if you are looking for an outdoor wedding!! This was another great fall day this year ~ truly enjoyed getting to meet and know them.

Christen and David, Sampson's Hollow - Walland TN

Christen and David were married at one of my favorite outdoor locations - Sampson's Hollow in Walland. This gorgeous farm wedding had wonderful details, like the seating chart posted out front, to the mason jar candles hanging on the fence by where the horses came to see the bride and groom. The flowers in the field were amazing that day, as they usually are. I loved getting to know them at their engagement session and it was even more fun on the wedding day!! I loved how in love they are ~ yes, that is a lot of love going around ;}

Don’t be afraid to tell a vendor you do not want to hire them.

When meeting with so many potential wedding vendors, you will encounter many that you have on your do not like list and a few on the ‘short list’. Be upfront and honest about what you want, expect and need. If you encounter someone that you know right away you would not be able to work with for any reason; cost, personality, services offered, etc. just tell them that you are not interested further and thank them for their time.

Most vendors keep track all of the brides that they meet with and their wedding dates so if the bride contacts them back, then they can go from there with the contract and booking process.

Once you have narrowed down vendors and cut them off your list, it is appropriate for you to contact them with just a quick email or call and let them know that you are not going to use them. There is work that goes on behind the scenes to keep the business running properly and keep track of it all. Vendors prefer to just know either way, and actually appreciate the response from you. Those folks can then make other plans or arrangements on that day – whether it is another booking, or even plans with their families 

Katie and Patrick, Nesselrod on the New River - Radford VA

LOOK - Pockets!!

Yes, this is the flower girl and ring bearer!

I love this photo - It was the last picture I took at the end of the night. Katie is actually sitting on an air vent to cool off after dancing and I love her holding her newborn neice. She was hidden behind the cake table and I almost missed her before leaving but luckily caught this last shot before we left.

This is one of the few times that I have chosen to travel for a wedding. I took my daughter with me for the weekend to help out. So this is the first time that I had the opportunity to meet Katie and Patrick and just really enjoyed them so much. First, Katie is close with her mom and her bridesmaids- I could tell right away. They were all so relaxed and the plan was for all photos before the wedding so Patrick did see her early in the day. The location is a beautiful B&B in Radford VA, and is super cute with pathways a waterfall, and gorgeous patio for reception to name only a few. This wedding was filled with many emotions, from huge belly laughs, to tears of joy - and that was just me !! I left there feeling as if I made some great new friends and just loved being there to see them get married.

Kelly and Glen, Almost Heaven Resort in Gatlinburg

Kelly and Glen were married at Almost Heaven Resort at the very beginning of Tropical storm Lee. They had off and on rain all day, but the rain was off during just the right moments. We had dry ceremony and dry for photos, and rain before and after - how great is that! Kelly's mom was very involved in the planning process and you can see the emotion while she was helping Kelly get ready, very sweet. They also had the help of a professional, Angie with Absolute Wedding Perfection and the day went wonderfully. Well except Glen locking his keys in one of the cabins ;) They danced into the night and had what Kelly said was the best day ever.

Choosing the RIGHT photographer ~ what people don't always think about.

Choosing the right photographer:

You will want to speak to many people, get referrals from friends, family etc. and use reputable resources (online, bridal shows, local magazines etc.) to find the photographers that you will spend your time interviewing, put in the time researching this and it will pay off. Check out their website, blog and Facebook pages and make sure that you really like the style of the photographs, and look for quality photographs. A good photographer should have a really good website. That is a key component to running a photography business. They also should either Blog or Facebook or sometimes both to communicate what they are up to in the social networks.

Once you have chosen your top 5-8 or so picks from research already done, contact them and find out if your date is available. That may eliminate several for you if you have a popular date or are booking last minute. Many photographers book up a year in advance, but I have noticed that with the change in the economy recently this has changed some. A statistic on The Knot this month stated that wedding photographers on average were being booked 7.5 months out from the wedding day. Find out whether this person is a full-time professional photographer, or if they have another job and do photography as a part-time job. Why would this matter? The full-time professional will give all of their time to you and they have invested in this as their profession so they will take it quite a bit more seriously than someone who is not.

You will read online and in magazines a list of questions to ask when you are looking for a photographer for your wedding. Most of these are very good and you should use some sort of set of standard questions when interviewing multiple photographers so you can really see the differences in each. Print off a list or two that you like and make sure to ask those questions as well as what I have added here.

Being comfortable with your photographer is the number 1 most important thing after the quality of their work in my opinion. You will likely be with this person more on your wedding day than any other vendor and certainly more than even your new husband. So be SURE that you like your photographer and have a really great rapport.

Things to ask that you won’t read about typically are things like:

- Tell me about the qualifications and experience of the 2^nd photographer (if there is one). Will this 2^nd photographer be able to shoot on their own or will they solely be used to capture the candid moments and stay with you the entire time, how long will we have that 2^nd photographer – know what their purpose is.

- Ask if they are part of any professional organizations, are they insured, licensed? Some venues require this. And it is another sign of someone who will really make sure you are taken care of properly throughout the whole process.

- How does the photographer handle last minute changes? What if someone is running late? What if the flowers don’t arrive on time? What if it rains? What if you change your mind on something? How does the photographer handle delicate family situations? Of course we want everything to go perfectly on your wedding day, but sometimes life happens and things just get hectic on the wedding day itself. How will your photographer handle the stress of these situations? If they are flexible and can go with the flow of the day and don’t seem stressed to answer these questions you will likely have someone who can handle the structured chaos of a wedding. If they are uneasy about these questions, or are too stringent with the schedule, then that tension may spill over onto you and add stress to you on your wedding day. The goal should be great photographs under any situation, so ask the hard questions about the wedding day itself.

Other things to think about:

The location itself, will there be lots of walking needed or driving to get to the locations you want to be photographed, and who will drive? – some photographers will take you around especially if they are already familiar with the location.

Are you comfortable with a male photographer to capture the getting ready shots in the dressing rooms? Will the 2^nd shooter be male or female, does that matter to you? How will they dress? Will they bring extra lighting stands, ladders etc. that may interfere with the ambiance of your wedding, or will it be OK with you?

Ask them to tell you what you should expect from them in detail on the wedding day and take notes.

And of course, when should you see your photos and how? And any other items album, disc etc, what is the timeframe to get these items, how will you get them? – this can take some time so please understand that 60-90 days to create and deliver an album is appropriate, but 6 months probably is not.

I know this sounds like a great deal, however, these are the things that I hear over and over from bridesmaids, parents and friends of my brides who tell me that they wished they had known some of these things before they chose their photographer. You are the bride, it is your day, you should have it the way you want it, and you should surround yourself with vendors who believe that way too!

Brooklyn - newborns, 3 and 6 months

I had the pleasure of working with Brooklyns mommy and daddy too for their wedding photos, and am so glad I get to work with little Brooklyn too. Here are a couple from her newborn session.... she did great!

Here Brooklyn is 3 months and we decided to go ahead and play a little bit with some of daddy's toys!

These were taken yesterday at the park for Brooklyn's 6 month session, I can't believe that I have to wait a whole 6 more months until I see her again!!

Oliver's First Year!

Why should you have photos taken when you are pregnant or in that first year from a professional, instead of just having a friend do it, or doing it yourself.... let's take a look at Oliver. He is such a sweet boy and I got to know his mommy and daddy when I photographed their wedding. He came to us a bit early and thankfully came through his first year healthy and strong! There are many times when I "see" something that my clients do not as a great photo opportunity, or just brainstorming with them we come up with some great ideas together. Since it is my profession, I am always looking for ways to improve, and practicing, and learning. I have the professional equipment. I am a mom and have lots of experience with kids in general and recently a whole lot of experience with babies, I am by no mean's the baby whisperer or anything, but have some great tricks up my sleeve! Why add one more thing on your "to do" list? This is a must have for any new mommy! AND Oliver got a great book to show off his first year too.

Christina's Bridal Shoot - Riverdale School, Knoxville

After many schedule changes due to her fiance' living out of town, Christina and I decided to change the engagement shoot to a bridal shoot. So we went to the Riverdale School where they would be getting married in late July. I had never been to this area before and it is stunningly beautiful, like most of East Tennessee. The school was built in 1938 and is now renovated as more of a small community center and there is a couple who do own it and live there. The building and grounds are gorgeous, and there is a church next door that hasn't been used in over 20 years with ivy growing all over it and paint falling off.... a photographers dream!!! She didn't have any flowers so her friend who came with ran and pulled some off of a nearby bush.. and presto - a bouquet.
The dress was altered by Christina and the lace is a simple, yet gorgeous cover. I have to mention Christina's mom. What a great lady. I am honored to have met her. She was a huge help to Christina for bridals and the wedding, but the funny part, is that whenever anything was needed, she would run - really take off and run and go get it :)

Christina and Dee's wedding - Riverdale School, Knoxville

The reason that I chose Christina and Dee's wedding to be the first one I blog about this year is really simple. She did something that none of my other brides have ever done. She is very organized and had a schedule to go over with me when we met for her bridal shoot. On that schedule, she had a 30 minute block, where it said "photographer break". I was just amazed and so glad she thought of me. She said she figured I might need to sit and take a break in a 7 hour day. I really appreciate her realizing that we really run around everywhere and don't take breaks very often and if we do they are MAYBE 10 minutes to grab a drink and a power bar and keep on moving.

Her wedding was absolutely beautiful, the historic building was a great backdrop for indoor and outdoor photos, and I really enjoyed getting to meet her family and friends. The boys were super fun with the whole "ball and chain" gag getting put on Dee's ankle at the end of the ceremony and fake lips for the kiss. And who would think that catching frogs would be a wedding reception event... well I guess if you're 10 you would think of that on a rainy night in summer in Tennessee :)

When it came right down to it, you could see how in love they are.

I'm BACK!!

With the ease of Facebook, I have been spending quite a bit of time with my updates this last year on there. However, I only have a limited amount of space to write so I will be back to blogging as well as using Facebook. I enjoy sharing the fun stories during my photo shoots and here is where you will find these. I also want to make sure to give credit to the wonderful vendors and venues out there that I work with so I can do that here as well. Since I have a year's worth of fun to share, it will not be in order... for now :) I will look back and just blog about some of the most memorable events that I can and go from there. Top 10 Trends of 2011 Weddings!

1. Sophisticated Elegance Returns
It's back to basics with elegant, sophisticated style in 2011. Wedding decor will be simple and understated, with modern design elements trumping DIY touches. 2. Outdoor Venues- Where It’s At
Couples tying the knot in 2011 will gravitate toward outdoor ceremony and reception venues. The raw, minimal backdrop of an outdoor setting leaves room for personalization and customization, a major perk for creative, hands-on nearlyweds. 3. Grey is the New Black, Crazy for Navy

And since metallics make such a bold statement on their own, couples will scale back over-the-top decor in favor of a more restrained style aesthetic.

5. Big Ball Gowns are Back
Dramatic ball gown wedding dresses floated down 2011 bridal catwalks in droves. Wedding dress designers draped, ruched, and layered clouds of tulle, power netting, and chiffon to fashion wedding dresses with limitless volume. The outcome? Fairytale-inspired bridal style and whimsical wedding dresses for 2011 I Dos.

6. Grooms Take a Walk on the Stylish Side

Kim and Josh, Butterfly Gap Retreat - Maryville

Kim and Josh were married at Butterfly Gap Retreat in Maryville. What a great location for just pure beauty, but also the staff there is exceptional!! It was a bit chilly - but we were able to stick it out. They also saw each other before the wedding and were able to spend time together-alone before the guests arrived. Super fun couple and I was glad to have worked with them before in the year for their engagments. The reception was also there and it was super fun.

Genie and Darrell started their day at The Marriott in downtown Knoxville, and then we headed over to The Blount Mansion for pictures. What a fabulous downtown place to get great photographs. The look on Darrells face is priceless - I loved his reaction to his beautiful bride to be!! We headed over to The Volunteer Princess Cruises for the ceremony and reception and it was a gorgeous wedding. They even happened to have the downtown Knoxville parade that evening - everyone was celebrating ;)

Brittni and Clint, The Whitestone Country Inn - Kingston

Brittni and Clint were married at The Whitestone Country Inn in Kingston on a lovely fall day.
This was one of the most organized, yet fun and stress free weddings I have ever been to. The bride and groom were so focused on each other is was very sweet and reminded me what true love looks like. We had wonderful weather and the staff at Whitestone were wonderful as usual. We had the opportunity to get down to the dock and take some photos down there and talk about a sexy couple - whew!!
I am so honored to have worked with both of them and their families and I know Jenni is too.

Whitney and Jayson - The Marriott Knoxville, The Blount Mansion Knoxville, Volunteer Princess Cruises Knoxville

Whitney and Jayson had their "first seeing" each other at The Marriott in downtown Knoxville where Whitney got ready, then off to The Blount Mansion for a few quick photos before getting on the luxury Volunteer Princess Cruises Yacht for their wedding and reception. Considering that Whitney planned all of this from out of town I was super surprised to find out that the grooms family lives right down the road from me! Small world - the wedding was beautiful and we couldn't have asked for a nicer day!

Jennifer and Doug were married on 10-10-10 in Gatlinburg at The Highlands Condos, and then to the Park Grill Steakhouse for reception. Yes, that is shrink wrap/ cellophane around their entire car!! It was also filled with balloons and TP!

Tiffany and Nathan were married at The Church of God in Townsend. We had fun taking pictures outside the church and found that it was still pretty hot even in October - weird year for weather... The sun made for some really beautiful lighting and the couple and their friends and family were wonderfully fun! We all headed to The Barn Event Center for the reception. It truly was a great wedding day. We are so glad to have been able work with you all.

Jill and Jake were married at The Preserve Resort in Wears Valley and then we headed to a spot by the creek for a few pictures. After the creek break, we headed on to The Barn Event Center of the Smokies for their reception. Again the staff was wonderful and every detail thought of. Jill had made a few props for her photos and it was such fun with them!!

Kerrie and Paul, The Barn Event Center - Townsend

Kerrie and Paul were married at The Barn Event Center in Townsend. This one was definately a party and it started early. The Barn was decorated wonderfully and the bright colored flowers truly complimented the blue she had with the girls and guys. They sweetly fed each other cake as to not drop a crumb upon one another..... wait - wrong wedding. They smashed each other !!
The time we did have with them and their families was wonderful.

Staci and Shane were married at Sampson's Hollow in Walland. Again, outstanding service by all the staff at Sampson's Hollow. They make the day so easy for everyone!! Staci had a zebra striped theme throughout the wedding and even on her bouquet :)

Stefanie and Forest, 1st Presbyterian Morristown and The Country Club Morristown

Stefanie and Forest were married at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Morristown and then headed to the reception at The Country Club of Morristown. This was one of those Tennessee wonderful weather days, it rained early and then let up and was sunny for the reception - thankfully. They brought their precious puppy for a photo or two - love it!!

Mary Jo and Kris, Sampson's Hollow in Walland

Mary Jo and Kris came in town to get married at Sampson's Hollow. It was just the two of them and the minister and one witness. What a sweet ceremony it was with them on the bridge! We had use of the farm to get photos and they even had cake and a toast together. They had a big reception at home later that month.

I am so honored to have been there for such an intimate afternoon!!

Andrew and Raven were married at Butterfly Gap Retreat in Maryville on a gorgeous day in summer. One of the few days under 90 degrees this year I believe. They were both so calm and not nervous at all. The reception was an all out dancing fest and the details were beautiful. Height difference... what height difference??

Nikki Maternity

Hello - I'm back to blogging. It has been a while as I have been using Facebook to post information recently and found that I really like to do both.... So I will blog backwards until I get caught up!!
First, I am really excited about last Sunday's Bridal Show at the Knoxville Convention Center by Put a Ring On It Events. Thank you to Shaunda Beatty and her team for a wonderful show. We got to talk with lots of brides and meet new wedding vendors as well. I truly enjoyed the slower pace of this show so we had time to talk with each bride longer!!
Congratulations again to Emily and Cody for winning 3 free hours of wedding day photography coverage!!

I have been volunteering for The Smoky Mountain Animal Care Foundation for 2 years now, and with the opening of the new Blount County Shelter - finally - I have been in there taking photos of the animals up for adoption. Melissa and David has a surprise ceremony at The Barn Event Center in December. Yes, I said surprise. They invited their guests to a dinner reception and had the ceremony once everyone was seated to eat. There were more tears at this wedding than I think I've seen, and just as many smiles after the ceremony!
Windy, windy day - but the sun was out and some blue skies - that was good.

November - Kim and Jared, Sampson's Hollow

Kim and Jared came up from Louisiana to get married at the ever popular Sampson's Hollow. It rained most of the day and the plans for ceremony got moved to the front porch, which turned out so fabulously. The porch was perfect! The rain let up enough for us to get a few outdoor photos and not have to walk too far using the smokehouse and red fence. Kim and Jared and their families and friends were super fun, there were boa's in her dressing room and writing in blue ink for her "something blue" - I won't say where on her it was!!

November - Melinda and Brad, Calvary Baptist and Tellico Yacht Club

Melinda and Brad got married in Lenoir City and I had the pleasure of getting to know them during our engagement session. They were calm and relaxed, even dancing to Miley Cyrus while getting ready. The ceremony was beautiful and we just made it to Tellico before the sunset and got some great photos at the water. I can't tell you how many smiles there were that day - except the father-daughter dance.. but that's to be expected!! I hope to know them for many years to come!

October - Jayme and Michael, Highlands and Park Vista Gatlinburg

Michael and Jayme came in to town from Chicago for their fall wedding in the smokies. They had a gorgeous spot at the back of the Highlands Condo's in Gatlinburg for the ceremony and then off to take photos at the Part Vista. They happened to have their wedding just hours after the rockslide on I40 and traffic was horrific everywhere trying to get around it. The ceremony started about 45 min late which was good considering... But that didn't stop them one bit from having a wonderful day and you could see how in love they are!

October - Julie and Scott, Headrick Chapel and The Barn Event Center

Julie and Scott came in town from Minneapolis to get married at the Headrick Chapel in Wears Valley and then to The Barn Event Center for reception. It turned out to be one of the best weather days this fall. The leaves were gorgeous vibrant colors and the temperature was a mild 60 ish with a breeze. We went near the water for some great photos before the ceremony and everything turned out beautifully - except one missing earring!

Danielle and Eric came in town from Texas and family came from all over the country for their wedding. We spent some time in the Knoxville Museum of Art and downtown then headed to The Volunteer Princess Yacht where they got married. The day was cold for October and Danielle had to use her train as a coat part of the time outdoors, but it worked :)
The Yacht was fantastic as always and everyone had a wonderful time!

Melissa and Chris came in from Mississippi for their wedding at Sampson's Hollow. And funny enough, a gal who works for Melissa down in MS attended her sisters wedding at the same exact place just two months before! And they both picked me for their photographer - what a small world - I love it!! Another beautiful wedding at Sampson's Hollow, and Melissa and Chris were so cute. I really enjoyed meeting them and their families, who in another weird twist may be related somewhere way down the Cades Cove clan to the owners of Sampson't Hollow!!

Raelynne and Ryan came up to Sampson's Hollow in Walland with their closest family and friends for their wedding. It was a country wedding in the most gorgeous place - Sampson's Hollow. The ceremony was small and intimate and just so wonderful. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the grounds and we even were able to get a group photo of everyone in attendance. Raelynne and Ryan were great and I had a great time trecking through some wildflowers and all around the farm.

Chantelle and Matt were married at St. Mary's Oak Ridge in a beautiful ceremony. The reception was at Middlebrook Gardens, on a fairly hot day in June. Angie and Ryan were married at the Sunsphere and had the reception there as well. This wedding was full of wonderful non-traditional surprises. It was a standing wedding, cakes on each table, the cake topper was custom to their personalities, which is knitting for Angie and the banjo for Ryan, which he played as she walked down the aisle with her father. We also had photos with the banjo and knitting needles and yarn with the rings instead of flowers - how great!! She wore dance slippers instead of heals and I never heard once about her feet... that is different for sure. I will say their friends and family were all wonderful, and the day was just fabulous. A gorgeous wedding. Thank you for having me be a part of it!

Rebekah and I had just a wonderful day, it was not rushed, we were able to utilize our time to get everything that Julie and I had planned on and more! Both families are very involved in thier lives and it showed by the emotion of the day. Also they had many friends and family come to join them, as it was standing room only in the chapel! Aimee and Myles were married at West Hills Baptist. They did not see each other before the ceremony. It did rain all day, heavy rain.. however it did not seem to bother either of them at all. They just seemed focused on each other. Thier families and bridal party were such fun. I wish you both the very best!

Brittany and Carll will be getting married in just weeks, but we found our way to getting the engagements done after rescheduling due to this funky weather... But we had fun at the park and I can't wait for the big day.
